United Artists Theaters Closed!:

Staten Island is home to several movie theaters that have served the Island for a couple of years now with newer ones opening like the Dine-In AMC which opened up in 2018 and the Alamo Drafthouse which just opened a year ago in 2022. However, the United Artists Theaters served Staten Island in the neighborhood of Mariners Harbor for 22 years and just closed 2 weeks ago on July 20th!

Located at 2474 Forest Avenue sat one of the largest theaters Staten Island had to offer with over 3,500 screens and 16 screens. Now there is an empty lot with the theater. Staten Island’s UA-16 location had closed down in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the location was permitted to be reopened in 2021, it was also listed “For Lease” but ultimately reopened in May 2021 but business never fully picked back up for the location. Regal Cinemas is the second-largest theater chain in the United States, trailing only AMC, with over 500 sites across the country. United Artists established the Mariners Harbor site in November 2001. With renovations being done in 2014, the business refurbished and outfitted it as a Regal Premium Experience (RPX), adding immersive sound effects and laser projectors.

Its demise comes after Cineworld, the cinema chain's parent business, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, rejecting contracts for hundreds of its theaters. "NewCo," to become the sole owner of Cineworld when it escapes from bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 later this month. This adjustment apparently prompted further closures, with multiple local news outlets stating that theaters in Illinois, Texas, Indiana, Kansas, and Pennsylvania may close soon as well.

On the theater's last open day, they had showings for “Barbie,” “Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning,” and “Sound of Freedom.” Since closing, all customers have been redirected to the Regal Bricktown location in Charleston, Staten Island.
