History of Port Richmond

It was also a popular overnight spot for those traveling from New York to Philadelphia during the 19th century. Port Richmond was the location where Thomas Jefferson's vice president Aaron Burr died at the St. James Hotel in 1836. While Port Richmond was settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, later in the 20th century, the neighborhood welcomed an influx of Polish, Italian, and Norwegian immigrants. Now, the small town remains populated with Victorian, Greek Revival, Colonial, and Federal style buildings and homes built during the mid-1800s, many located along quiet residential streets in the southern end of the neighborhood.
