History of Randall Manor

The neighborhood's namesake is Captain Robert Randall who is best known for creating Sailors' Snug Harbor, a Staten Island institution and popular tourist destination located right in the heart of Randall Manor. Built in 1833 as a home for retired seamen, the property now consists of a botanical garden, performances spaces, and a cultural center, all housed in a number of well-preserved 19th century buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. During the late 1800s, Captain Thomas Melville, brother of Moby-Dick author Herman Melville, served as the Snug Harbor community's governor.

One of Randall Manor's most attractive aspects is its proximity to the St. George ferry terminal less than ten minutes away via Richmond Terrace located to the north of the neighborhood. There, commuters can ferry across to Brooklyn and head to points north. Buses also pick up passengers bound for the terminal along Henderson Avenue, Richmond Terrace, Castleton Avenue, and Lafayette Avenue. Stops for the express bus to midtown Manhattan are located along Forest Avenue just south of Randall Manor.
