History of Midland Beach

Once populated with oceanside resort communities, Midland Beach drew beach-goers looking to escape the city and spend the warm months swimming in the surf, sunning on the shore, and playing at the area's famous amusement park, Happyland. Visitors would spend their summers gambling at Midland Beach's casinos, catching Vaudeville acts, or fishing off the piers. Now, the neighborhood is home to fulltime residents who still enjoy the new recreational opportunities along the boardwalk.

Midland Avenue and Lincoln Avenue constitute Midland Beach's business area, with the majority of the neighborhood's retail stores and services located along those streets. The rest of the neighborhood is primarily residential, and thanks to the NYCDEP's Bluebelt flood mitigation project, great swatches of Midland Beach are open wetlands which will include attractive plantings to give the neighborhood a more natural setting. Given the small size of Midland Beach, there's only one school in the immediate neighorhood, but school-age children can attend middle and high school in neighboring New Dorp. There are also several private schools nearby Midland Beach. The neighborhood's most popular destination is the FDR boardwalk and the new weekend beach-side amusement park that was recently opened in the neighborhood. A playground, shuffle and handball courts, and concession stands are available along the beach.

Midland Beach Schools

At the end of 2013, the New York Public Library opened the Midland Beach branch on South Street, a true educational boon to the neighborhood and welcome addition to the community. There are also a number of public schools near Midland Beach, including PS 44 and PS 22 Graniteville, as well as daycare centers and preschools. Numerous businesses are located throughout the neighborhood, but the majority of retail amenities and services are situated on Richmond Avenue, Forest Avenue, and South Avenue.

Transportation in Midland Beach

Midland Beach is served by the Staten Island Railway via Jefferson, Grant City, and New Dorp train stations, which makes the neighborhood a convenient location for those who use public transportation to commute. The Staten Island Expressway and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge are less than a 10 minute drive away. The St. George Ferry Terminal is easy to reach by car from Midland Beach via Father Capodanno Boulevard and Bay Street 20 minutes from the neighborhood. Express and local buses stop along Midland Avenue.
