All about the Staten Island Neighborhood Charleston:
Staten Island is broken down into 14 different zip codes from 10301 to 10314 and into 67 different neighborhoods. Throughout this series of blogs, we will be discussing each and every neighborhood on Staten Island as well as breaking down the history, what stands there today and transportation and what community district it falls into. Staten Island is broken up into three different community districts which are: North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore.
Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, Charleston. This neighborhood is home to the South Shore and to the zip code 10309. Charleston is bordered by Tottenville to the south, Pleasant Plains to the east, Rossville to the north, and the Arthur Kill to the west.
Through the 18th century, Charleston, which the Androvette family first established as a small hamlet in 1699, was known as Androvetteville or Androvettetown. Eight of the village's twenty-nine structures belonged to the Androvette family in 1850, when they were active farmers and owned eight of the village's twenty-nine buildings. Charleston might still be known to some residents as Kreischerville. The region became known as Kreischerville after Balthasar Kreischer, a Bavarian immigrant and the founder of the Kreischer Brick Manufactory, settled there. His commercial success spurred development in the neighborhood. On Kreischer Hill, Balthasar Kreischer had three mansions constructed, one of which is still standing and has been declared a historical monument. The Staten Island Land Development LLC restored the last surviving Kreischer House, which is located at 4500 Arthur Kill Road and Kreischer Street. A 70-seat restaurant that will be open at night is permitted to function in the house. The 1854-built factory was restored after it was devastated by fire in 1877. In 1927, the plant eventually closed its doors.
The origin of the term Charleston appears to have occurred during World War I, when anti-German feeling peaked as a result of American involvement in the conflict. The name "Charleston" seems to have been selected to honor Charles Kreischer, a son of Balthasar Kreischer. Mail sent to Charleston at one time had the postal designation "Staten Island 13, New York" and was delivered by its own division of the United States Postal Service. In 1949, the post office at 28 Androvette Street was shut down.
The neighborhood's most recent developments range from a large shopping corridor to the first zero energy library. The first Target and third Home Depot in Staten Island are two of the many stores that are situated in the open-air lifestyle complex Bricktown Centre at Charleston, which was recently developed in the region. Along Veterans Road West is a second retail complex. That area of Charleston has continued to develop. Construction on The Tides at Charleston, a 120-unit senior community, began in the summer of 2007. By early 2008, the apartments were ready for tenancy. The Kreischer house will remain as a key landmark for the development and be preserved as part of the $25 million Kresicherville Active Adult neighborhood.
Long the hub of a significant commercial area, the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Manor Road has lost some of its importance in recent years with the advent of the Staten Island Mall in 1973. By the time the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964, the region was fully developed. Compared to most other communities on the island, Castleton Corners was comparatively unaffected by the sudden increase in population that followed the opening of the bridge.
Many Charleston homeowners continue to maintain horses on their properties today. On Veterans Road, a Shoprite debuted in June 2016. By 2020, it will be the only store in Charleston. Developers revealed in September 2017 that Riverside Galleria, a 600,000-square-foot retail center in Charleston's south being planned by Studio V Architecture, would be built. The NYPL's first net-zero energy library in New York City opened on March 17, 2022. It will be situated in the Bricktown Commons retail complex on the South Shore. The structure will get almost all of its electricity from solar panels. It is a dedicated space for adults, teens, and children as well as flexible multi-purpose rooms for programs and classes are available at the Charleston Library. Charleston is always finding new ways to grow and ways to benefit the neighborhood. Charleston is served by the S74, S84, S78 are all the local bus routes. Also served by S55 on Bloomingdale Road. SIM26 is the express bus which also runs alongside Bloomingdale Road. The NYS Route 440 and the Korean War Veterans Parkway both pass through this area as well. Lastly, opened in January of 2011 off of Arthur Kill Road was the Charleston Depot. Charleston’s schools range from many Public and private schools for all ages.
As you may see, Staten Island exudes so much history that is still honored throughout our neighborhoods. Charleston is home to many people from Staten Island. The neighborhood is covered in every corner with many food spots, transportation, parks and schools. This neighborhood is worth learning more about and living in.
