The island's first public high school, Curtis, was founded in February of 1904, as part of the city-wide plan to institute a public high school in each outlying borough. Curtis High School, located in New Brighton, is an architectural feat! The century-old building with its massive square tower, made entirely of brick and limestone, resembles the Neo-Gothic style of architecture, present in Medieval Europe. The building was designated as one of the landmarks of New York City in 1982.

Education

Curtis has 10 specialized programs. It offers a wide array of both humanitarian and technical…

Starting at the Verrazano Bridge, South Beach has a board walk that stretches two miles from Fort Wadsworth and then another half mile to encompass Midland Beach. Off the boardwalk at South Beach you can kayak, play tennis, or fish at the Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier. On top of that there are other amenities offered in the park area such as chess tables, benches and bocce courts especially designed for seniors. Midland Beach has a playground and courts for shuffleboard and tennis as well as a Sea Turtle Fountain for children.  Staten Island's newest beach Cedar Grove follows and…

Eight years ago we gathered around our kitchen table with what was for the last time with my Mom.   My Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and we were made aware that these were her final days.  We were all feeling there was nothing anyone could do to lighten the weight of our heavy hearts.  We were hopeless.  The woman who gave us this news was from the American Cancer Society.  Along with this she sat with us and she proceeded to talk with us about HOPE.  Knowing that nothing would ever be the same again she helped us to trust that we weren’t alone. This is just one of the many ways the American Cancer Society gives strength for us to FIGHT.  Saving lives from cancer starts with one team, one participant and one dollar at a time.  Together we can…
