All about Historic Richmond Town:
In the Richmond town section of Staten Island, there is an authentic town and farm museum complex called Historic Richmond Town. It is situated at the intersection of Arthur Kill Road and Richmond Road, which is close to the island's geographic center. Historic Richmond Town is a staple location in Staten Island. This is a popular location for all the people of Staten Island.
The Historic Richmond Town keeps the history of Staten Island alive by keeping this place open all year round. The county offices were gradually relocated from Staten Island to closer to Manhattan, after Staten Island joined the other five boroughs of New York City in 1898. As a result, Richmond Town became a quiet community as the many businesses that catered to the government offices left the area.
The Staten Island Historical Society and Borough Historian Loring McMillen recognized a chance for historic preservation in the abandoned structures in the 1930s. As a result, the Society was granted permission to convert the old County Clerk's and Surrogate's Office into a museum in 1933. After the museum's debut in 1935, the Society went on to buy a number of additional neighboring historic structures. The Third County Courthouse was made available for the Society to utilize in 1948. The 100-acre Richmond Town property was purchased by the City of New York in the early 1950s, and it was given the preservation designation Richmondtown Restoration. With 30 historic buildings, this location is currently the biggest of the four sites that make up Historic Richmond Town.
Different exhibits are available to explore when visiting this place. The Historic Richmond town offers different guided tours for families and friends. Fall and winter guided tours go from October 3rd to April 30th on every Friday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm. The guided tours step off at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. While the spring and summer offer an open village from May 25th to October 2nd from Wednesday through Sunday 11am-5pm. General admission from adults (ages 12 and up) is $10 and Kids (ages 6-11) are $5. Kids age 5 and under and members are free.
Historic Richmond Town also provides school programs. The first program they offer is a guided tour that can be booked. A historical interpreter costumed in period attire will lead students on an exploration of Staten Island-specific historic structures. Historical relics and papers, as well as historically accurate interiors, bring the past to life for an engaging tour of the living history town. They also have a program named light the village, to learn about the evolution of lighting via a hands-on program. Students will build their own candles to take home and take part in a hands-on guided tour and demonstration of early lighting technologies in authentic 19th century houses and businesses.
Historic Richmond Town has an apprentice program for kids ages 12 through 15 which runs from July to August. The extensive range of apprenticeship programs in historic Richmond Town let students develop practical skills based on decades of American inventiveness. The program is a fantastic substitute for the time-tested summer camp. Small groups of less than five people are used for individualized sessions in the historic trades, which speed up learning while students work with an experienced artisan to develop their skills.
One of the main attractions located near the Richmond town is Egger’s Ice Cream. This location is extremely popular for all people when visiting the Historic Richmond Town.
