All about the Staten Island Neighborhood Emerson Hill:
Staten Island is broken down into 14 different zip codes from 10301 to 10314 and into 67 different neighborhoods. Throughout this series of blogs, we will be discussing each and every neighborhood on Staten Island as well as breaking down the history, what stands there today and transportation and what community district it falls into. Staten Island is broken up into three different community districts which are: North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore.
Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, Emerson Hill. This neighborhood is home to the Mid-Island and to the zip code 10301, 10304 and 10314. Near the northern end of the Staten Island Expressway, Emerson Hill is divided from Grymes Hill, while Todt Hill, where private roads are also present, borders on the south.
A number of gates have already been discovered at the entrances to the enclave, and some of the roads on Emerson Hill are private. Truck travel and through vehicles are prohibited in the area, according to signs at the Emerson Drive and Douglas Road gates. Gates and security guards are absent from certain sites. Additionally, there is no indication designating the roadways as private. It is not an authorized gated community. The area is classified residential and a component of the Special Natural Area District, which recognizes its distinctive natural features and necessitates the evaluation of site change requests by the City Planning Commission. To ensure zoning regulations are followed, the Department of Buildings approval is normally needed before removing trees from private property in the region.
The hill is named after Judge William Emerson, the eldest brother of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who resided in the long, brown shingle home known as The Snuggery with his wife, Susan, and children William, Haven, and Charles. Henry David Thoreau, who resided with the Emersons from May to October of 1843, instructed Willie and Haven. Thoreau only lived somewhere other than Concord, Massachusetts once as an adult.
