Throughout this series of blogs, we will be discussing each and every neighborhood on Staten Island as well as breaking down the history, what stands there today and transportation and what community district it falls into. Staten Island is broken up into three different community districts which are: North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore.

Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, Elm Park. This neighborhood is home to the North Shore and to the zip code 10302 and 10303.

The area has seen numerous names, including Jacksonville about 1830 and Lowville around 1850. Its current name, which alludes to the elm trees that could be seen on the doctor's estate, was given to it by a local doctor named Dr. John T. Harrison. St. Mary's Cemetery, one of two Catholic cemeteries on Staten Island, is located in Elm Park and is accessible from New York State Route 440's final exit before crossing the Bayonne Bridge. The second cemetery is much bigger and is situated near Grasmere. This frequently confuses people.

Elm Park is served by many local buses around the surrounding streets. S40, S44, S89, S90 and S94. Elm Park was also served by the Staten Island Railway at the North Shore Branch until 1953. The neighborhood also is served by many schools with tons of transportation to each. The elementary schools P.S. 21, P.S. 22, I.S. 51 and Port Richmond High School.

As you may see, Staten Island exudes so much history that is still honored throughout our neighborhoods. Elm Park is home to many people from Staten Island.
