Most of those living in Staten Island, especially in neighborhoods such as Castleton Corners, Sunnyside, Westerleigh, Sunset Hill, and West Brighton, know of Clove Lakes Park. This park which runs from Forest Avenue to Victory Boulevard, serves a variety of recreational activities for people within the area, as well as people who may not live in the area and are looking for something to do. Whether you enjoy running, biking, basketball, fishing, the playground, or even taking your dog for a casual walk, Clove Lakes Park has it all.

History of the Park:

The name for Clove Lakes Park derived from the Dutch word "kloven", meaning cleft. The cleft they were referring to is the valley and brook between Emerson and Grymes hill. About 20,000 years ago the glacier deepend the valley, while the damming of the brook which ran from Clove Swamp to Kill Van Kull, created the different lakes and ponds within the area. Over time as more dams were built, the three lakes and ponds within Clove Lakes Park, Brooks Lake, Martling pond and Clove Lake, were established.

Recreational Activities:

Throughout the park there are different areas to do activities such as hiking, biking, baseball, basketball, and a plethora of other sports and entertainment. Its not uncommon that you can see a baseball game on the large field they have, or children playing soccer with each other. These amenities in the park create a sense of community and allow people of all ages to have a fun time without having to go far. On the topic of having fun, the playground area of the park includes swings for younger and older children, slides also varying by age, monkey bars, other jungle gym areas, and a spray shower which is perfect for hot summer days! If you're into fishing, there is more than enough room to enjoy with the 3 lakes in the park. There are however regulations to this in order to protect the wildlife, you can visit New York City Department of Parks and Recreation website, to find out what some of these limitations are. Another great feature of the park are the paddle boats that one can rent for an hourly rental fee. This is a unique and amusing way to hang out with family or friends while enjoying nature at the same time. You might be thinking what can I do during the winter? Not to worry, sledding is common at Clove Lakes. The hill at the corner of Martling and Slosson Avenue has become a popular spot for sledding these past years, giving people an easy and tireless activity to make the snowy weather not such a drag. Conveniently, Tom Crimmins Realty's Manor Road office is located just up the street from this part of Clove Lakes, where you can fulfill all your home buying and renting needs.

The Stone House:

Often referred to as the "secret restaurant" because of its quiet and secluded location, The Stone House has been open for years serving as a lovely, scenic place to dine. Whether you are having a surprise party, wedding, bridal shower, or any other function you can think of, The Stone House serves as a beautiful and elegant venue. The cottage-like structure, gazebo, fountains, and lakeside patio give this restaurant a welcoming feeling and gorgeous view. Not only is the exterior impeccable but the food too lives up to high standards. The food's eclectic quality set it apart from other restaurants in the area, making the menu one to please a variety of palates.

A little about the owner:

The owner Peter Botros, started running The Stone House on his own at the age of 29. Native to Staten Island, Botros has had his share of experience in the restaurant business including South Fin Grill and the Vanderbilt located at South Beach, Angelina's Ristorante in Tottenville, as well as Pepper Jack Grill located right next door to Tom Crimmins Realty, in Castleton Corners. Funny enough, Peter Botros is also a mortgage broker with US Mortgage alongside Elli Kalamaras, all while running The Stone House! If you would like to know a little bit more about him and what his restaurant has to offer, stop by and give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

WWII Veterans War Memorial Ice Skating Rink:

Besides sledding, Cloves Lakes also has an ice skating rink located on Victory Blvd. This ice skating rink was first opened in 1995 as a tribute to veterans throughout history. Now, this open-top rink allows people to enjoy a fun winter activity while also getting to take in the surroundings of the park. The rink is open from October to March, on Fridays from 4:00 p.m-11:00 p.m, Saturdays from noon-4:30 p.m and 7:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m, and finally Sundays from noon-8:00 p.m. The admissions for the rink are $10 and $5 to rent skates if you don't own a pair already.

As you can see, Clove Lakes Park is bursting with resources to be taken advantage of. Between the park, The Stone House, sledding in the snowy weather or even ice skating, you will never be bored going there.
