History of Travis

Like many other neighborhoods in central Staten Island, Travis was once populated by farmland until the country's first linoleum factory opened its doors in the area back in the mid-19th century. Modest single family houses began to spring up around the streets of Travis, transforming the once rural landscape into a more residential center. Still, Travis remains one of the least populated neighborhoods on Staten Island with around 2,500 residents. Travis' claim to fame is its annual Independence Day parade, which has been running for over a century, turning the neighborhood into a Fourth of July party that welcomes residents and visitors from far and wide.
