History of Snug Harbor
With the Kill Van Kull to the north of the area, Snug Harbor was once a center of sea commerce and business. The old seaports and shipyards still remain along the waterfront, but the vast majority of the neighborhood is comprised of Sailors Snug Harbor, a former seafarer retirement home-turned-cultural center and performance space established by Captain Robert Richard Randall in 1833. Sailors Snug Harbor is also home to the Staten Island Botanical Gardens and the Staten Island Children's Museum.
