History of Oakwood
Oakwood was once comprised of swathes of farmland and pastures with a resort on the beachfront, both of which have now given way to residential housing. While the vast majority of Oakwood residences are upper-to-middle single-family homes, there are pockets of luxury housing in parts of the neighborhood.

Oakwood's Nearby Amenities
Most of Oakwood is private residences with its business and commercial districts clustered around Hylan Boulevard and near the train station on South Railroad Avenue. Both areas provide residents with shops, restaurants, and other conveniences nearby their homes. A large shopping center is also located next door in the New Dorp Beach neighborhood. One of Oakwood's most popular attractions is the Cedar Grove Beach on the waterfront. Not long ago, the beach was private with a number of family-owned bungalows occupying the sandy strip of land. The family-friendly beach is now open to the public and features paths, restrooms, and public art installations. Additionally, Oakwood borders Great Kills Park and is close to Midland and South beaches. A number of private and public schools are located throughout the neighborhood and in nearby neighborhoods.
Oakwood Schools
At the end of 2013, the New York Public Library opened the Oakwood branch on South Street, a true educational boon to the neighborhood and welcome addition to the community. There are also a number of public schools near Oakwood, including PS 44 and PS 22 Graniteville, as well as daycare centers and preschools. Numerous businesses are located throughout the neighborhood, but the majority of retail amenities and services are situated on Richmond Avenue, Forest Avenue, and South Avenue.
Transportation in Oakwood
Most Oakwood residents prefer to drive, but there are still plenty of public transportation options. The Oakwood Heights train station on South Railroad Avenue provides commuters with access to the St. George Ferry terminal, while local and express buses make stops along Guyon Avenue and Hylan Boulevard. For those who choose to travel by car, the entrance to the Staten Island Expressway is approximately twenty minutes away, and the Outerbridge Crossing to New Jersey is fifteen minutes from the neighborhood.
