History of Mariners Harbor

Mariners Harbor was a thriving seaport in the 19th century that did brisk business in seafood and shellfish harvesting. Later on in the 20th century, the waterfront became a hub for ship building, shipping, and dry docking. Standard Oil Company's circa-1907 tugboat number 16, otherwise known as the John McAllister, remains docked at Mariners Harbor and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood is largely residential with the main business districts located on South Avenue, Morningstar Road, and Forest Avenue, while Richmond Terrance is primarily industrial.

Numerous businesses are located throughout the neighborhood, but the majority of retail amenities and services are situated on Richmond Avenue, Forest Avenue, and South Avenue.

Mariners Harbor's commuter advantage is that it is within close proximity to both the Bayonne Bridge on the eastern end of the neighborhood as well as the Goethals Bridge to the west. The Staten Island Expressway, located to the south, also provides car commuters entrance and exit from the Island. Richmond Terrace, which runs along the waterfront north of Mariners Harbor, gives residents access to the St. George Ferry Terminal in one straight shot. Local buses make a variety of stops along Forest Avenue, Morningstar Road, Brabant Street, Richmond Terrace, Arlington Place, South Avenue, and Holland Avenue.
