Clifton Neighborhood Summary
Facing the New York Harbor with the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge looming in the background, Clifton was once the personal playground of one of the country's most prominent families, the Vanderbilts. After seeing many changes, both positive and negative, the multicultural neighborhood seems poised for a reawakening, while the area's homes still remain affordable for those seeking to live on the island.
Homes for sale in Clifton include single family and townhouse units, and are generally priced more reasonably than real estate in neighboring areas. If you're interested in an affordable home with easy access to the rest of Greater St. George, Clifton might be just the place for you.

History of Clifton
Clifton was once a major hub, thanks to ferry service that provided access to Bayley Seton Hospital (previously the United State Public Health Service Hospital) and the National Institutes of Health. Some of remains of the old Bayley Seton Hospital's buildings still stand on the hospital's current location, stone edifices blanketed with ivy, harkening back to time of grandeur that can still be seen in these buildings and other structures on historic Vanderbilt Avenue, named after Cornelius Vanderbilt, the man behind Grand Central Terminal. One can almost hear the whispers of the past while traveling east on Vanderbilt, toward Bay Street and the waterfront.
