History of Arrochar
During the mid-nineteenth century, immigrants from Scotland an area just a few miles from both the Narrows and the island's Lower Bay and named it after the Glasgow village where its first Scottish settler, W.W. MacFarland, was born. But before MacFarland or any other Europeans came along, the Lenape Indian tribe called the neighborhood home. Arrochar was also once home to renowned architect Henry Hobson Richardson, whose circa-1867 Beaux-Art mansion still stands and greets visitors as they enter the island via the Verrazano Bridge. Now, the neighborhood is home to a culturally-diverse group of residents.
