Winning students (Dorothy Ha, Damien Montanez, Garrett Vanderneut, Samantha Harrell) attended awards ceremony for Tom Crimmins Realty's Annual Essay Contest at The Manor House on Tuesday June 20, 2017. Alongside them are Suzanne and Tom Crimmins, Dan Boxman from United Northern, and fellow Tom Crimmins Realty agents (Peter Nacionales, Jack Favaloro, Vince Monardo, Sheri and Abe Aruch).

After a while of hard work and dedication in 5th grade classes across Staten Island, students and their schools submitted their essays to Tom Crimmins Realty's Annual 5th Grade Essay Contest. Following the submission of hundreds of essays from many schools both public and private, all essays were thoughtfully reviewed by our agents and staff.

This year, students were asked:

  • As the borough of Staten Island continues to grow, how can we as a community maintain and upgrade our quality of life?
  • The topics to discuss are liter, property curb appeal, quality of life, safety, zoning, infrastructure, deer population, and maintaining our parks and beaches.

After reading all submissions and adhering to the rubric, the following young essay writers were selected:

  Student School
1st Place Damien Montanez PS 30
2nd Place Samantha Harrell PS 35
3rd Place Garrett Vanderneut Our Lady of Good Counsel
4th Place Dorothy Ha PS 29
5th Place Aidan Hayes PS 3

With so many wonderful submissions, it was a difficult decision narrowing down to just four winners, hence why there is also a 5th place winner. All of the student writers did an outstanding job presenting their thoughts on how we as a community can improve the quality of life on Staten Island, and we hope that these thoughts can go on to become a reality. The students were also very proud and excited about their essays winning. First place winner, Damien Montanez, said he is very proud of his essay since he worked hard on it, and he thanked his mom and grandma for encouraging him to be the best he can be. Some of the other winners discussed their choices for middle schools and their feelings on moving up. Dorothy Ha, mentioned how she is going to Mark Twain Intermediate School for writing, while Samantha Harrell said she is very excited about moving on to middle school at Marsh Avenue, but she is upset about leaving her friends. Considering the admirable effort put into these essays, we believe these students will do great in middle school, and we wish them the very best of luck in the future!

The prizes for the winners were as follows:

  • 1st Place– Laptop
  • 2nd Place– iPad Mini Tablet
  • 3rd Place– Samsung Galaxy Tablet
  • 4th Place– Kindle Tablet
  • 5th Place- Kindle tablet
  • $100 Amazon Gift Card to the 1st Place Winner's Writing Teacher
