Cape style homes come in different variations which change the layout of the home. There is a cape cod style home which is, typically single-story structures with a pitched, side-gabled roof, with a rectangular design, and a central chimney. The essential elements of Cape Cod homes were preserved, but dormers or second floors were frequently added in succeeding decades. A full cape style home is also referred to by the term double cape. Includes a center entrance and two symmetrical multi-paned windows which are positioned on either side. Additionally, it has a very steep roof and a huge chimney. Naturally, different versions of the Cape design homes will have varied floor plans. A half Cape has a living area in the front and a kitchen in the back. To find which style cape home layout you like more, you will have to do research and go visit different open houses.

There are definitely advantages to living in a cape style home. One major advantage is the home has a small roof so if repairs ever need to be done, it will be cost efficient. Along with the roof being sloped, snow or ice will not pile up so you won’t have to worry about the roof collapsing. Cape homes also include an effective layout to use up all the space which makes for a great starter home for most. There is also room for growth depending on the style of home you have and the space available on the lot. Lastly, cape homes age well compared to other architectural beauties like Georgian or Victorian homes.

The cons range depending on the area you reside in. If you happen to live in a warm climate, the biggest con about a cape home will be that summer cooling costs for Cape design homes can be high. This is due to the attic space of the house allowing heat to enter the upper level, which causes the upstairs to frequently become quite hot. You will need to install an additional cooling to the upper floor to chill that area. If your ideal master bedroom includes a large walk-in closet, a suite bathroom, etc. You may have to reconsider buying a cape style home, unless the property has previously undergone an extension or you have significant budget funds set aside for this addition. Lastly, if you are not one for the architectural beauty of a cape style home then you may have to reconsider. To make a cape style home truly modernized, the project will be expensive.
