Saint Joseph Hill Academy is an all-girls private high school operated by the Daughters of Divine Charity, located in the Arrochar neighborhood on Staten Island, under the address 850 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10305.
The school was established back in March 1919, when Mr.William Knauth's fourteen-acre estate was purchased by Reverend Mother M.Kostka Bauer. The Daughters of Divine Charity began to host tutoring classes there and eventually the establishment grew to become the Saint Joseph Hill Academy. The school was recognized by and received full accreditation from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in 1938.
On August 26, 1956, the initial ceremony for the construction of the present day building took place, and the building was officially dedicated on May 22nd, 1958, by Francis Cardinal Spellman. A new gymnasium and four additional high school classrooms were added to the campus in 1999; and the school's quick-paced growth continued when a new engineering lab was added in the early 2000's.
The academic unit of the school consists of nine Departments: English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Science & Engineering, Social Studies, Technology, and The Arts. Each department has a wide variety of classes to appeal to all grades and interests; for example, the English department offers 10 different classes, ranging from British Literature to A.P. English Literature.
There are also many Advanced Placement classes offered at Saint Joseph Hill Academy such as English Literature, English Language, European History, American History, Government, Calculus, Biology, and Computer Science Principles. There are also many electives offered including Accounting, A.P. Art History, Introduction to Law, Sociology, A.P. Psychology, World Religions, Theology, and Musical Theatre/Opera.
At Hill, students entering their junior year are given the opportunity to either choose the STEM pathway or the Humanities pathway, which helps the school create an individualized program for each student. The NY State Regents requirements for math, science, English, and social studies are mandatory for both pathways, as well as the school's religious requirements.
Students attending Saint Joseph Hill Academy are required to wear a uniform which follows the navy blue and white color scheme. It primarily consists of a blue postman skirt with a matching blazer, a white shirt, white stocking, and saddle shoes. During the colder seasons blue postman pants are worm, along with a navy sweater, and black or navy coats. Accessories are limited to one pair of gold/silver earrings and a simple necklace. Juniors and seniors are also allowed to wear their class ring and minimal amounts of makeup.
At Saint Joseph Hill Academy there are 12 athletic teams: Cheerleading, Cross-Country Track, Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Indoor Track, Swimming, Golf, Outdoor track, and Softball. Additionally, in the 2018-2019 school year Hill will be introducing a Fencing Club which will run throughout the school year. The athletic programs are highly successful, for example this past year the Saint Joseph Hill Academy golf team won the CHSAA championship against Saint Joseph-by-the-Sea High School.
There are over 30 clubs offered at the Academy, ranging from American Cancer Society Club to Photography Club.
