When you're packing all your furniture or items from your old home into your new house, it can be overwhelming. You have to worry about not breaking the items, choosing and calling the moving companies, thinking of what to pack, etc.

Regardless of how difficult things might be, Tom Crimmins Realty knows best with these useful packing tips:

1. Find and Pick Out Moving Companies

Before you move to your new home, you should find and hire a moving company. There are many options online, you have to find the one catered to your budget and location. Whether you are moving to another borough, blvd, avenue, or street, keep an eye out for the perfect moving company for you. For more advice, click here

2. Donate, Sell, or Get Rid of Some Things

Before you move into your new home, you should get rid of those things that you won't use or need. It will save you time for packing and allows you to start with brand new items at your new home. You don't have to automatically get a trash bag and stuff everything you don't need into it. One man's trash is another man's treasure! You can donate some things to charities or to your friends and other family members. If you don't want to donate everything, there is the option of selling things online to make a quick buck.

3. Take Photos of Valuable Items

Before you start your move, you should take pictures of all your most valuable items and treasures. If you have a record of them, you can keep track if they made it or not into your new home. Also in case of emergencies, you can pull out these images to show the original conditions and appearances of your items.

4. Find and Obtain Insurance

Some of your most treasured items have a lot of monetary value to them. You should find the right insurance company to cover for all those items. If you broke or lost a certain object, the insurance company can refund the money that the object cost. In addition, it is a relief that your stuff is being protected or accounted for.

5. Collect CardBoard Boxes

When you purchase something online or if someone ships a package to your house, you should save those boxes for your moving venture. You can save money from collecting all these boxes, instead of buying new ones! Also, they come in different sizes. If you buy from a store, you have to buy a pack of the same size. Some items are bigger, smaller, fragile, or sharper than others. It's good to keep different size boxes for all your items.

6. Label Your Boxes

No matter what task that you have at hand, it is a good thing to be organized! When you're about to move, you should color code and write with sharpies or markers to label your boxes. If you label everything, it will make your life so much easier! You can identify which boxes go to which room, so you can make your unpacking go more smoothly. It is very satisfying to know that you are being well organized for moving into your new home.

7. Save and Pack A 24 Hour+ Survival Box

Moving all your items to a new home is very time-consuming. Therefore, it's suggested that you pack a survival box that helps you survive for 24 hours or longer while you move.

Items include:

  • Air Mattress
  • Outfits
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Snacks
  • Water Bottles
  • Takeout Menus
  • Extra Emergency Cash

8. Call Your Family Members and Friends

Moving by yourself is going to be overwhelming, so call up your family members and friends! Whether you're moving to Staten Island, another street, avenue, or blvd, having more people to help you pack, move, then unpack is such a huge weight off your shoulders. Plus, it will be lots of fun and a ton of bonding when everyone works together!

9. Tape Your Boxes Well

There have been many scenarios when the top lid of the boxes suddenly opened or ripped. We can avoid those scenarios by simple taping the exteriors of our boxes well. You should take a couple pieces of tape to close the bottom and top seams. One of the techniques that movers use is taking the tape and wrapping it all the way around the box’s top and bottom edges two times, where stress is concentrated. That way, you boxes are tightly wrapped and secured.
