Notre Dame Academy is a private Catholic Girls' school in Staten Island and is located on 134 Howard Avenue. As a private school, Notre Dame isn't owned by the Archdiocese, but they maintain a close affiliation with the Archdiocese. Notre Dame Academy is located on a 13-acre campus on Grymes Hill, consisting of an elementary school (Pre-K3 - 8) and high school (9-12), Notre Dame has about 700 students. While providing an education in the Catholic tradition, Notre Dame Academy is open to girls of all faiths.

History

Notre Dame Academy was founded in 1903 when Mr. William Miller-Jones traveled to Montreal to seek the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame and asked them to come to Staten Island to open up an independent school. After his appeal, the sisters were granted permission by New York’s Archbishop Farley and  Mr. Miller-Jones then began looking for a location on Howard Avenue. The school opened in September 1903 and was called the Academy of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. The school started taking in the first boarding students in 1908 and the tradition continued until 1959. The school expanded further up Howard Avenue and then the school applied for and was granted approval by the New York State Board of Regents for the elementary school in 1914 and a charter for the high school in 1917. Eventually, the population of Staten Island increased and the demand for an education increased too. The sisters met this pressing need by purchasing and renovating two more estates thereby expanding to the current 13 acres.

In 1949, the school went through several changes, including the school seal and the official name change to Notre Dame Academy of Staten Island. In the 1950s and 1960s, the school expands even further, including a separate building to house the elementary school and the school contained a new cafeteria and gymnasium.
