Staten Island is broken up into three different community districts which are: North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore.

Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, New Springville. This neighborhood is home to the Mid-Island and zip code 10314. The neighborhood was established at Karle's Neck around 1680 and was subsequently known as Karle's Neck Village due to its location close to the island's geographic center. The hamlet had multiple freshwater springs and a pier on Richmond Creek by the early 19th century, which led to it being nicknamed first Springville and subsequently New Springville.

Up until 1964, New Springville was primarily rural. Then, on the site of a former poultry farm, the E. J. Korvette department store company erected a location. Following this, the Staten Island Mall opened in 1973 on the grounds of what had previously been a little-used airfield, significantly altering the neighborhood's identity. Soon after, nearby property was also put to use for commercial purposes. Since then, New Springville has developed into a major administrative and economic hub that rivals St. George.

Thousands of single-family homes, as well as apartment and condominium complexes close to the Staten Island Mall, were built in New Springville during the latter third of the 20th century, in addition to its rapid development as a business district. A brand-new educational facility has recently been built close to these condos and apartments. P.S. 58, an elementary school, as well as new middle and high schools, have been finished. In 1982, the LaTourette House from the 19th century was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

With six city bus lines serving the region, one of which travels to Brooklyn, and a terminus at the Staten Island Mall on the Marsh Avenue side, New Springville has also grown into a significant public transit hub, second in size on Staten Island only to that of the St. George ferry station. The Yukon Bus Depot, which can house 380 buses, was established in the early 1980s. To this day New Springville is served by the S44, S59, S61, and S79 lines, however there is no late-night service. Six express bus routes are also available: the SIM4, SIM4C, SIM4X, SIM8, SIM8X, and SIM31. The S59 route offered late-night bus service in New Springville until 1995. However, as of June 28, 2010, there are no overnight buses in New Springville. The nearest overnight bus routes to New Springville are the S62 on Victory Boulevard to the north and the S74 on Arthur Kill Road at the Eltingville Transit Center to the south. The S74 and S62 are both relatively far from New Springville's residential area because they are situated in Eltingville and Bulls Head, respectively. The neighborhood is also served by many schools for kids of all ages, Pre-Schools surround the areas as well as elementary schools P.S.58 & P.S.69. For Intermediate Schools we have I.S.72 & the Marsh Avenue School for Expeditionary Learning. For High Schools we have Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School & College of Staten Island High School. For higher learning the neighborhood is served by the College of Staten Island which offers many majors of all different types.

As you may see, Staten Island exudes so much history that is still honored throughout our neighborhoods. New Springville is home to many people from Staten Island. The neighborhood is covered in every corner with many food spots, transportation, parks and schools. This neighborhood is worth learning more about and living.
