Laura Mooney, an agent here at Tom Crimmins Realty a part of the Lauria-Mooney team who comes highly recommended here at our office and has sold 10+ homes in the last year with a couple million dollar deals as well! She has amazing reviews as she is wonderful at assisting with selling and buying homes for her clients, the work she does for the community does not just end there. Laura has founded The Staten Island Multiple Myeloma Support Group just over 10 years ago after her husband was diagnosed with the disease. The work she has done for this community is just ongoing.

Charles Mooney was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2010 and was in remission initially for 8 years after a stem cell transplant. With a recent setback, Charles has been in remission for two years while being on an immunotherapy drug due to a maintenance program. He is the whole purpose behind this group and for him to be an inspiration and help to those a part of the group as well.

The disease is often difficult to detect and even harder to catch early symptoms and to know what to look for. Laura is urging Staten Islanders to be aware of the symptoms of blood cancer, being able to catch it early is critical to a successful treatment plan. It tends to be more common in men than women and even more in people of different ethnicities. Exposures to chemicals such as pesticides and different fertilizers. Early symptoms can consist of anemia, bone pain, renal failure and back pain. These symptoms are easily looked over or even missed. This disease can and will destroy your bones and people will even be unaware of how they broke bones from a fall.

Multiple Myeloma

This disease is very common in first responders especially those who were present during the 9/11 attacks and they are still being diagnosed frequently to this day. The group is still active as the growing number of people who are struggling with this disease need Mooney's assistance. The members of the group are able to keep in touch with attorneys from Barasch & McGarry to help provide assistance to be able to get medical insurance and funds from the VCF. They even bring speakers from nurse practitioners, specialists from cancer cents and even those with legal expertise have all spoken to provide insight to members during their monthly meetings. Their meetings are held at the Joan and Alan Bernikow JCC located at 1466 Manor Road, on every second Wednesday of the month.

Laura and Charles Mooney have created a group that has become a family over the many years. They are always welcoming new members with open arms and even visit the home of hesitant prospective members. They have benefited this community with such a big impact with the encouragement and resources they provide to others. Consult a medical professional if you are experiencing any symptoms.
