Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, Grymes Hill. This neighborhood is home to the North Shore and to the zip code 10301 and 10304.On Staten Island, New York, a 374-foot-tall hill made of serpentine rock is called Grymes Hill. It is the second-highest natural point in the five boroughs of New York City and on the island. The Silver Lake community is partially located on the hill.

Suzette Grymes, wife of well-known New Orleans attorney and Virginia First Families member John Randolph Grymes, is honored by having the hill bear her name. William Charles Cole Claiborne, the first governor of Louisiana, was her first spouse. In 1836, she relocated to Staten Island.

Ward Hill to the north, Silver Lake to the west of it, Sunnyside and Emerson Hill to the south, Concord to the southeast, and Stapleton and Stapleton Heights to the east are some of the neighborhoods around Grymes Hill. Van Duzer Street and Richmond Road up to the Staten Island Expressway's interchange, which together with Clove Road defines the southern side, form the east side of the hill. Victory Boulevard is located to the west. Some say Cebra Avenue marks the northern border, while others say Louis Street does.

The Narrows and Lower New York Bay may be seen from Grymes Hill, which is Staten Island's second-highest point after Todt Hill. At the junction of Victory Boulevard and Louis Street, next to the Notre Dame Academy property, sits Hero Park, a 3 acre park. The Special slopes Preservation Zoning District, which came into being in 1987, protects the area's slopes and forests. Breweries began excavating beer-making caverns into the hillside in the middle of the 19th century. Some of these caverns off of Van Duzer Street were eventually turned into a well-known eatery that catered for The Godfather during Staten Island filming. Since then, the restaurant has closed, and the entire area has been renovated.

A retreating glacier created Grymes Hill. The serpentine or soapstone region of Staten Island, which stretches from New Brighton to Richmond, comprises the island's hill terrain. However, where the weathered stone was eroded, the rock is firm and thick in texture and dark green in color. Where glacial erosion was restricted, the stone weathered into a soft, yellowish, fragmented condition to which the name "soapstone" is attributed. Green, yellow, or brown hues of the granite are sometimes spotted with red mottling.

Grymes Hill is served by many local buses around the surrounding streets. S53, S61, S66, S91 and S92. Express buses include SIM30 and SIM35. On top of all of that the neighborhood also is served by many higher education institutions such as Wagner College and Staten Island campus of St. Johns University. Also on the hill is Notre Dame Academy which is an all girls high school. Nearby is also P.S.35 and Casa Belvedere.

As you may see, Staten Island exudes so much history that is still honored throughout our neighborhoods. Grymes Hill is home to many people from Staten Island.
