Staten Island is broken down into 14 different zip codes from 10301 to 10314 and into 67 different neighborhoods. Throughout this series of blogs, we will be discussing each and every neighborhood on Staten Island as well as breaking down the history, what stands there today and transportation and what community district it falls into. Staten Island is broken up into three different community districts which are: North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore.

Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, Great Kills. This neighborhood is home to the South Shore and to the zip code 10306, 10308 and 10312. It is the northernmost community on the South Shore, according to several local geographers. Great Kills Harbor lies to the south, Bay Terrace to the east, Eltingville to the west, and Richmondtown to the north. The old Dutch term "kill" has many common interpretations, including "creek" and "channel." The name might be understood to suggest that there are numerous little streams in the area since they dot the landscape.

Originally referred to as Clarendon after a British colonial ruler, the eastern part of what is now known as Great Kills was once known as Newtown. Both were briefly referred to as Giffords, after local commissioner and surveyor Daniel Gifford.The former Giffords railroad station in Great Kills still has the name, as do Giffords Lane and Giffords Glen as well as P.S. 32's Gifford School. The location was known as "La Grand Kills'' by French immigrant Jacques Guyon in 1664, the last year of the Dutch province of New Amsterdam, when the phrase "Great Kills" first appeared.

Eastern Great Kills was formerly a part of Westfield in Richmond County, New York, while western Great Kills was formerly a part of Southfield from the 1680s, when the English colonial administration was established, until 1898, when Staten Island was combined into New York City.Before the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in the 1950s, Great Kills and the other East Shore communities on Staten Island were primarily rural with a few beach resorts scattered throughout.

Great Kills is served by many local buses around the surrounding streets. S54, S74, S78, S79 and S84. Express buses include SIM1, SIM5, SIM6, SIM7, SIM9 and SIM10. The most commercial streets nearby are Amboy Road, Arthur Kill Road & Hylan Blvd. On top of all of that the neighborhood also is served by the Great Kills station on the Staten Island Railway. Schools include P.S.08, P.S. 32 and I.S. 24 as well as the Great Kills Library branch.

As you may see, Staten Island exudes so much history that is still honored throughout our neighborhoods. Great Kills is home to many people from Staten Island.
