Looking for a quick bite to eat? Sit down dinner? Want to take a fun exercise class or catch the latest feature film? Look no further than the North Shore’s own gem, Forest Avenue.

Forest Avenue has humble beginnings, formerly used at Route 439, connecting the Staten Island Ferry to Elizabeth, New Jersey. Today, it still extends almost completely across the northern island, with Gulf Avenue in Mariners Harbor as the western border and Victory Boulevard, near Tompkinsville to the east. Known as the “business district,” this winding road is home to 165 businesses, big and small, and features a variety of eateries, as well as professional services.

Places to Eat:

There are dozens of unique, tasty eateries along this strip. Feeling exotic? Try Sumac, a long-standing Mediterranean restaurant nestled near the corner of Forest and Llewellyn. Traditional Greek cuisine mixed with middle-eastern influences will leave you wanting more.

Right next door lies a West Brighton classic, Egger’s Ice Cream Parlor. Since 1932, this dessert haven has been serving up homemade ice cream, sundaes, and an assortment of other sweet treats. This is the perfect place for birthday parties and other festive celebrations.

Of course, we can’t forget Crimmins Ale House, another venture of Tom Crimmins Realty owners, Tom and Suzanne Crimmins! This is one of the Avenue’s newer additions, but it is surely making a splash on the North Shore foodie scene. Stop in to share a cold one with friends, laugh, watch sports, and indulge in some barside munchies.

For some upscale dining, spend an evening at Casa Franco. This restaurant specializes in Spanish cuisine blended with a selection of European and Latin American flavors and features an airy, chic interior.

For the health nut among us, worry not, you can find your place on Forest Avenue as well! On the corner of Forest and Sharon Ave lies Better Gourmet Health Kitchen. This little restaurant, one of four, offers a variety of healthy wraps, heroes, pizzas, breakfasts and more. They also boast numerous vegan options and are especially known for their delicious fruit-filled smoothies. Speaking of smoothies, SoBol near Forest and Bard serves up delicious acai and pitaya smoothie bowls layered with homemade granola and fresh fruit. It's the perfect light midday meal.

If you’ve been dying for a new place to start your mornings off, grab a friend and head over to Project Brunch. This recently opened location is a hot spot for diners of all ages, and home to a variety of sweet and savory brunch foods. With ridiculously creative dishes like Oreo Stuffed Pancakes and Mac Daddy Waffle Sandwiches, they’ll be sure to leave your mouth watering.

Beans and Leaves Cafe also has an extensive menu of breakfast items. They are most renowned for their delicious, inventive waffles, but, as the name implies, this eatery is the perfect place to grab a homemade cup of coffee or tea. You can even pick out your own coffee beans or tea leaves, bringing home some of those warm coffee shop vibes.

 Excellent Alternative Options:

Forest Avenue is not only restaurants. There are also various shops and other activities.

On the site of the old Planet Fitness is Push Fitness Club. This gym has a vast schedule of fitness classes, like yoga and bootcamps, with a more sophisticated vibe than other standard gyms.

Nearby is Country Mouse, a quaint children's boutique. This shop prides itself on its beautiful, unique clothing, crafted for children newborn to pre-teen. It has 35 years of experience in the business and still thrives amongst Forest Avenue businesses.

There are a number of beauty, hair, and nail salons along this strip, including Beyond Beauty, Molly's Boutique, New York New York, Forest Creative Nails, Christopher Michael Salon. Stop into one of these many locations for a relaxing spa day, or a quick, affordable makeover.

One last West Brighton gem is Rustic Music II, near the intersection of Forest and Davis Ave. This small business boasts an extensive selection of musical instruments. If that wasn't enough, they also offer music lessons, instrument repairs, recording session and much more. If you have an ear for music, or just a creative spirit, Rustic Music II, might be the spot you've been looking for.

This array of accessible, creative businesses makes Forest Avenue the perfect mix of small town and big city. Looking to find a home in the West Brighton area?
