It transformed into a middle-class, multiethnic village of government servants by the 1950s, including firefighters, teachers, and physicians. After the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in the 1960s, many residents of the other districts of New York City relocated to the Park Hill Apartments, which are now situated on Vanderbilt Avenue and Park Hill Avenue. The emerging middle-class population that Staten Island originally drew, however, was lost as people discovered that it was comparatively inexpensive to relocate there and buy a house or rent an apartment in smaller buildings by the late 1960s.
