Staten Island is broken up into three different community districts which are: North Shore, Mid-Island, and South Shore.

Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, Bloomfield. This neighborhood is home to the North Shore and to the zip code 10303 and 10314. Bloomfield is located directly to the west of Bulls Head and to the north of Travis-Chelsea. Off its shore, in the Arthur Kill, is Prall's Island. When it was first inhabited in the 17th century, the area was known as Daniell's Neck. Later, it was given the name Merrell Town in honor of a nearby landowner. On a neighborhood map, its current moniker first appeared in 1874.

Very few people actually lived in Bloomfield during the 20th century because building firms stored heavy machinery like cement mixers on a large portion of the city's land. A huge oil preservation terminal retained by Gulf Oil would once be found there, resulting in one of the service roads of the West Shore Expressway acquiring the name of Gulf Avenue. The 82 tanks at the 440 acres port, which was constructed in 1936 and had a total capacity of 215 million US gallons, were destroyed after the terminal's closure in 1998.When several massive office buildings were built in the late 1980s, commercial development but not residential accelerated quickly.

On South Avenue, the major thoroughfare, additional companies began to emerge in the early 2000s, including two hotels: Hilton Garden Inn in 2001 and Hampton Inn & Suites in 2007. An unsuccessful attempt to construct a NASCAR raceway on the location of the old Gulf Oil plant was one of many grandiose plans for Bloomfield's wide open spaces that were made in the 2000s. The Matrix Global Logistics Park, a distribution facility for businesses like Amazon and Ikea, debuted in Bloomfield in the fall of 2018 and brought more than 2,000 employment and development to the region. However, since the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964, Staten Island as a whole has seen a significant increase in the building of new homes.

Bloomfield is served by the S46 and S96 pair along South Avenue and the S40 and S90 pair along Gulf Avenue. This neighborhood is near a plethora of charter schools including Lavelle.

As you may see, Staten Island exudes so much history that is still honored throughout our neighborhoods. Bloomfield is home to many people from Staten Island. The neighborhood is covered in every corner with many food spots, transportation, parks and schools. This neighborhood is worth learning more about and living in.
