Today we will be breaking down all the history about the Staten Island neighborhood, Arden Heights. This neighborhood is home to the South Shore and the zip codes 10309 and 10312. The western portion of Annadale, a Staten Island, New York, USA community, is commonly referred to as Arden Heights. The majority of New York City maps, including Hagstrom's, have “Arden Heights” listed as a location. Arden Heights is bounded to the east by Annadale, to the south by Huguenot, to the west by the Arthur Kill, and to the north by the Fresh Kills. The name “Arden Heights” was first used in 1886 by renowned Staten Island real estate entrepreneur Erastus Wiman; it is most likely a reference to the elevation that presently towers over the Village Greens retail complex and apartment development.

Arden Heights, long known as the location of the Roman Catholic orphanage St. Michael's Home For Children experienced a significant change in 1971 when the mentioned Village Greens, New York City's first planned urban development, opened there. Mayor John V. Lindsay, who proudly declared in the late 1960s that journey time from the Greens to Lower Manhattan will generally take one hour and fifteen minutes, laid the foundation stone for the project. The Saint Michael's orphanage, which was located off Arthur Kill Road, was shut down in 1982. Some of the property it occupied was sold to developers, and the remaining portion was put aside for a chapel that bears St. John Neumann's name. On the east side of the property, the church also maintains a convent for the Presentation Sisters; in 2005, a portion of this land was sold off, and new home construction was to follow here as well. This is yet another indication of Staten Island's ongoing housing boom, which has continued essentially undoubtedly since the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964.

A shopping center and a New York City public elementary school were simultaneously developed to serve the residents of Village Greens. The building is now the focal point of a neighborhood with a distinct identity from Annadale. The numerous single-family homes that have since been constructed around it, giving Arden Heights more in common with Mid-Island communities like Willowbrook than with Annadale and other South Shore neighborhoods.
