2013 5th Grade Essay Contest Recap

“Today’s Writers…Tomorrow’s Leaders”

We are proud to announce that our first annual essay contest for all 5th graders was a huge success!  We had over 460 children participate in our essay titled “If you were an elected official, what steps would you take to help Staten Island recover from Hurricane Sandy?”

The essays were simply amazing!  The ideas and children’s thoughts were so very creative.  After much thought and many difficult decisions our highly seasoned committee came up with four winners. Olivia Popek from St. John Villa Academy took home the first place Platinum award and a laptop with case, printer, flash drive and $100 staples gift card.  Michael Albano from St. Teresa was the 2nd Place Gold winner and a new owner of a laptop with case and $100 Barnes and Noble gift card.  Aidan Sadowski from P. S. 35 was the 3rd place Silver winner and took home an iPad with a new case and a $100 gift card.  Steven Zhang from P.S. 53 was the 4th place Bronze winner and has a new Kindle and a $100 gift card from Amazon.

The awards dinner for the children and their families was held on Tuesday, June 18th at the Pepper Jack Grill on Manor Road.  Everyone had a great time.

We would like to thank all the children who participated in the contest as well as their schools, teachers and parents who supported our essay contest.  We would also like to thank our amazing committee made up of Debbie Arrigo, Elena Brown, Billy Crimmins, Tom Delese, Christine DiPaulo, Fran Gilberto, Carl Lapiedra, Peter Nacionales, Jill Subes and Nancy Terracino for all their hard work and professionalism.

Our thanks also go out to our sponsor Martin and Loiacono Law Firm for all their help.  Due to an overwhelming positive response we promise to continue this fun filled community event next year!

All the Best and Thanks Again,

Tom & Suzanne Crimmins
